Matrimandir is a golden spherical structure located in Auroville, a universal township located in the southern part of India, near the city of Puducherry. Matrimandir is considered the spiritual center of Auroville and is also known as the “Soul of the city”.
The idea of Matrimandir was conceived by the founder of Auroville, Mirra Alfassa, also known as “The Mother”. The construction of Matrimandir began in 1971, and it took 37 years to complete. The structure was inaugurated on February 28, 2008.
The design of Matrimandir was inspired by The Mother’s vision of a temple that would symbolize the Divine’s presence in the world. The sphere-shaped structure is covered with gold-colored discs and has twelve petals that open up to reveal an inner chamber. The chamber is a large, white, marble-clad space that houses a crystal globe, which is said to symbolize the universal consciousness. Natural light enters the chamber through a single opening at the top of the structure, which is called the “Sunbeam”.
