As the Dean of FAS, Gay is responsible for overseeing the academic and research programs of the division, as well as the hiring and management of faculty and staff.
Gay, who is a political scientist, joined the faculty of Harvard University in 2006 and has held several leadership positions at the university, including as the director of the Inequality and Social Policy Program at the Kennedy School of Government. She was appointed as the Dean of FAS in 2018, succeeding Michael D. Smith. Her appointment was widely hailed as a historic moment, as she became the first Black person to lead one of Harvard’s major academic divisions.
